Having completed all the Early Bird crits and training sessions, I have upgraded to category 4. Casey from NCNCA sent me a little "4" sticker to put on my racing license.
I took my new status out for a spin yesterday by doing the Apple Pie Criterium in Santa Rosa. On the last lap a bunch of people went down right in front of me. I rolled over a downed rider like he was a speed bump ... ended up lying on the ground along with 6 or 7 other people. Finish line was 400m away and I never made it. Too bad - I was feeling good and in decent position.
I'm bloodied but ok. Another cracked helmet. Bike is fine.

Pardon me (and this is maybe an expression of my ignorance), but... You rolled over a person? Is that normal in cycling? I mean, I see how that can happen, but it still seems so bizarre. How was -he- after the roll-over?

He fell down in front of me and was lying there on the road in a heap next to his bike. I had no choice but to go straight over him. He was a little hurt but basically ok.
I guess it's about as common as one of those chain-reaction accidents on the freeway where you rearend the car in front of you and then get rearended by the car behind you.

as they say with motorcycles, it's not if you crash, but when you crash. looks like you've gotten the when-you-crash part out of the way with only superficial damage i hope.
